US Commerce Seeks Comments on Drone Security Rules

The US Department of Commerce is seeking public comments by March 4 on potential rules to safeguard the supply chain for drones, citing threats from China and Russia that could allow adversaries to remotely access and manipulate devices, exposing sensitive US data. The department has taken steps in recent months to crack down on Chinese drones, including a ban on new drone models from DJI and Autel Robotics, which account for the majority of commercial drone sales in the US. In September, Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo said restrictions similar to those that would effectively ban Chinese vehicles from the United States could be imposed, focusing on drones with Chinese and Russian equipment, chips, and software. The administration of President-elect Donald Trump will make a decision on new rules restricting or banning Chinese drones by January 20.
